1)Government launches Study in India programme to attract foreign students:- The Ministry of Human Resources Development (HRD) has approved ‘Study in India’ programme to attract foreign students to pursue higher education in India.

The programme will provide meritorious foreign students fee waiver and scholarship. The proposed fee waiver and scholarship will be decided by institutes Concerned.

2)NARSS 2017-18:- 

What is it  :-- National Annual Rural Sanitation Survey (NARSS) 2017-18

Who Conducts this survey :- The survey was conducted by Independent Verification Agency (IVA) under World Bank support project to Swachh Bharat Mission Gramin (SBM-G).

Key Findings of the Survey :- 

  • 77% of the rural households were found to have access to toilets.
  • 93% households in villages who have access to toilets are using them.


3)Pradhan Mantri Vaya Vandana Yojana (PMVVY):- Government has launched the ‘Pradhan Mantri Vaya Vandana Yojana (PMVVY)’ to provide social security during old age and to protect elderly persons aged 60 years and above against a future fall in their interest income due to uncertain market conditions.

The scheme enables old age income security for senior citizens through provision of assured pension/return linked to the subscription amount based on government guarantee to Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC).




The scheme provides an assured return of 8% per annum for 10 years. The differential return, i.e. the difference between return generated by LIC and the assured return of 8% per annum would be borne by Government of India as subsidy on an annual basis.

4)India’s Contribution to World’s GDP:-  As per the information available from World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF), the contribution of India to world’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), measured as share of GDP of India in world GDP (at current prices in US$ terms) is consistently increasing since 2014 as shown in the table  below.



5)Cabinet approves certain official amendments to the National Medical Commission (NMC) Bill:- 

What are the amendments:-

Final MBBS Examination to be held as a common exam across the country and would serve as an exit test called the National Exit Test (NEXT): Thus, the students would not have to appear in a separate exam after MBBS to get license to practice. NEXT would also serveas the screening test for doctors with foreign medical qualifications in order to practice in India.

The provision dealing with bridge course for AYUSH practitioners to practice modern medicine to a limited extent has also been removed.

The maximum limit of 40% seats for which fee would be regulated in private medicalinstitutions and deemed universities has been increased to 50% seats.

Number of nominees from States and UTs in NMC increased from 3 to 6.

The punishment for any unauthorized practice of medicine has been made severe by including a provision for imprisonment of up to one year along with a fine extending up to Rs. 5 lakhs.

7)‘Transformation of Aspirational Districts’ programme :- Launched by the Hon’ble PM in January, the ‘Transformation of Aspirational Districts’ programme aims to quickly and effectively transform some of the most underdeveloped districts of the country.
