1)State nod for religious minority tag for Lingayats :- Karnataka Cabinet on Monday decided to accord ‘religious minority’ recognition to Lingayats and Veerashaiva-Lingayats who follow the philosophy of 12th century social reformer Basaveshwara.

It also decided to recommend to the Centre to notify the status under the Central Minority Commission Act.The religious minority tag will come into effect after the Centre notifies it.

This would mean that the Lingayats would not get any additional reservation in government jobs, apart from what they are already entitled to under the backward classes quota.

However, the tag would benefit those running educational institutions in many ways, including exemption from providing Right To Education quota.


2)Simla Agreement July 2, 1972 :- The Simla Agreement signed by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and President Zulfikar Ali Bhutto of Pakistan on 2nd July 1972 was much more than a peace treaty seeking to reverse the consequences of the 1971 war (i.e. to bring about withdrawals of troops and an exchange of PoWs).

It was a comprehensive blue print for good neighbourly relations between India and Pakistan. Under the Simla Agreement both countries undertook to abjure conflict and confrontation which had marred relations in the past, and to work towards the establishment of durable peace, friendship and cooperation.

3)Centre plans law on online ‘hate speech’ :- Home Ministry has written to the Law Commission to prepare a draft law to curb online Hate Speech.

T.K. Viswanathan panel submitted a report recommending stricter laws to curb online hate speech.

The Bezbaruah committee had proposed to insert two stricter anti-racial discrimination provisions in the IPC after some Discrimination cases on Students from North East.

ABOUT LAW COMMISSION : 

Law Commission of India is an executive body established by an order of the Government of India.

The Commission is established for a fixed tenure and works as an advisory body to the Ministry of Law and Justice.

The first Law Commission was established during the British Raj era in 1834 by the Charter Act of 1833.

The first Law Commission of independent India was established in 1955 for a three-year term.

The 20th Law Commission was established in 2013 under the Chairmanship of A.P Shah.

Justice Balbir Singh Chauhan, a former judge of the Supreme Court was appointed Chairman of the 21st Law Commission.

5)Prime Minister’s Shram Awards:- Instituted in 1985, for the workers in recognition of outstanding contribution towards production, and for showing exemplary zeal and enthusiasm in discharge of their duties in the Central/ State Governments Public Sector and Departmental Undertakings.

The Awards are presented to the workmen as defined in the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947 and employed in the Departmental Undertakings of the Central and State Governments, Central and State Public Sector Undertakings and private sector having minimum of 500 employees on roll and engaged in manufacturing and productive processes and whose performance is assessable.

These awards are announced on the eve of the Republic Day/Independence Day
