1)August – the month of Revolution 

Highlighted by Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his monthly radio programme “Mann Ki Baat”.

Non Cooperation Movement was launched in August 1920. 

Quit India Movement also known as “August Kranti” started on 9th August 1942.

The slogan of Quit India was coined by Dr. Yusuf Meher Ali. During this movement major role was played by second generation leader like Ram Manohar Lohia and Jay Prakash Narayan.

During Quit India Movement Mahatma Gandhi gave the call of “Do or Die” .

India achieved its independence on 15th August 1947.  



2)Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) :=

ICAI is the regulatory body of Chartered Accountants 
It works under the administrative control of Ministry of Corporate Affairs. 

It was in news as ICAI has asked for change in rules and regulations  of CA Act so that it can expedite action against CA’s who were involved in money laundering and other such wrongdoings.


Facts for Prelims :=

Whitefly: a pest that attacks cotton in Punjab. Cloudy weather without rainfall increases the growth of whitefly.

Sahid Udham Singh: revolutionary leader who assaisnated Sir Michael O Dwyer former Lt. Governor of Punjab to avenge the Jaliianawallah bagh massacre.

Niraputhari Festival: the annual fertility ritual held in Sabrimala which devotees believe will bring  prosperity and good luck.
Sabrimala is a Hindu pilgrimage center located at Periyar Tiger Reserve in Western Ghats in Kerala.  

Palur Canal – is a canal linking Chilika lagoon with the Bay of Bengal at the Rushikulya river mouth. The 21km long canal was dug up in 1866 during the infamous famine known as Na-anka Durbhikya .
Palur Canal is a zero gravity canal (on which net effect of gravity is zero) and is ecologically important as it is one of the three important links that connects Chilika with the sea.

About Chilika:- Chilika lake is the largest coastal lagoon in India and the second largest lagoon in world after The New Caledonian Barrier Reef in New Caledonia
In 1981 the Chilika lake was designated as the first Indian wetland of international importance under the Ramsar convention.

Earlier it was in Montreaux records but later on removed from that.

Article 142: allows the Supreme Court to pass such order or make such decree as is necessary for doing complete justice in any cause or matter pending before it.

There is a growing criticism that Article 142 is being used by the Supreme Court to enter policy making domain as it was seen in the case of banning sale of alcohol along the National and State highways.

Residex Index :- It is created by NHB i.e National Housing Bank. Residex means Residence Index
NHB is wholly owned by Rserve Bank of India.

3) Sovereign Gold Bond Scheme 

Launched by Government of India on 5 November 2015 to develop a financial asset as an alternative to purchase of physical gold.

The investment limit per fiscal year has been increased to 4kg for individuals, Hindu Undivided Families and 20kg for trusts and other similar identities notified by the government from time to time.
