1)Tribunal prohibits dumping of waste near Ganga banks :- An area of 100 metres from the edge of the Ganga between Haridwar and Unnao has been declared a ‘No Development Zone,’ with the National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Thursday prohibiting dumping of waste within 500 metres of the river.

An environment compensation of ₹50,000 will be imposed on anyone dumping waste in the river.

The NGT also directed the Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand governments to formulate guidelines for religious activities on the ghats of the Ganga and its tributaries.

3)Saraswati: Indian scientists discover supercluster of galaxies:-  A team of Indian astronomers have identified previously unknown, extremely large supercluster of galaxies located in the direction of constellation Pisces. It has been named “Saraswati”.

What is Supercluster? A supercluster is a chain of galaxies and galaxy clusters. It bound by gravity consisting of tens of thousands of galaxies.


4)President Pranab Mukherjee has given his assent to Maharashtra Prohibition of People from Social Boycott (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Bill, 2016.

Maharashtra is the first state in the country to formulate a law to punish social boycott.

Background;- Maharashtra in recent times had witnessed an increasing number of incidents of social boycott and violence at the orders of caste panchayats.

Salient features of the Bill:-


  • The Bill terms social boycott as a crime and says anybody indulging in it would face imprisonment maximum upto 3 years and a fine of 1 lakh rupees or both
  • It disallows social boycott of any individual or groups by caste panchayats or groups of individuals or gavki or by its members or by social or economically influential persons. 
  • Persons involved in practice of social boycott for reasons like rituals of worship, inter-caste marriage, any connection to lifestyle, dress or vocation will face stringent punishment. 
  • The offence registered under the act will be congnizable and bailab

  • It will be tried by a judicial magistrate of the first class.


5)China’s most famous political prisoner, the Nobel laureate and democracy icon Liu Xiaobo passed away 

Liu was a Chinese literary critic, writer, human rights activist who called for political reforms and end of communist single-party rule. He is also known for his role in 1989 Tiananmen Square protests in Beijing.
