1)HRD Ministry: No Detention Policy to be removed from next Academic Year(2018):- 

What is the Law:- What the law says?

Under the Right to Education Act, 2009, no child admitted to a school will be held back in any class or expelled till the completion of elementary education covering Classes 1 to 8.

What is no detention policy?

According to this provision “no child admitted in a school shall be held back in any class”. This translates into automatic promotions to the next class every year until Class VII.

What is the Alternative of Exams as Per RTI:- Instead of Exams, schools are supposed to hold Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluations (CCE) for every child.

What were the Recent Recommendations of TSR Subramaniam Committee regarding this:-

The TSR Subramanian committee for formulation of the National Policy on Education has also suggested that ‘no detention’ policy should be discontinued after Class V.

It had recommended restoration of detention provision, remedial coaching and two extra chances to each student such to move to a higher class.

2)India has now declared itself free from Bird Flu:-

India has declared itself free from Bird Flu (highly pathogenic Avian Influenza – H5N1 and H5N8) and notified it to the World Organisation for Animal Health.

The move will help it resume export of poultry products to the countries which had banned trade in such items early this year.

Other Diseases from which it has been declared  free:-
  • Small Pox
  • Polio
  • Yaws 

3)New Student Connect Programme launched in delhi.


Name of the Programme:- Jigyasa

Some Facts about it:-
  • Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), has joined hands with Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) to implement this programme. 
  • The focus is on connecting school students and scientists so as to extend student’s classroom learning with that of a very well planned research laboratory based learning

The model of engagement includes:-
  • Student Residential Programmes.
  • Scientists as Teachers and Teachers as Scientists.
  • Lab specific activities / Onsite Experiments.
  • Visits of Scientists to Schools/Outreach Programmes.
  • Science and Maths Clubs.
  • Popular Lecture Series/ demonstration programme at Schools.
  • Student Apprenticeship Programmes.
  • Science Exhibitions.
  • Projects of National Children’s Science Congress.
  • Teacher Workshops.
  • Tinkering Laboratories

Now Important thing is that CSIR has now entered into its 75th year of Formation. (It's Contributions become important for the MAINS Examination).

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research  was established by the Government of India in 1942 is an autonomous body that has emerged as the largest research and development organisation in India.

Ex. National Physics Laboratory(Measurement Standards Lab) that also manages the Indian Standard Time(Clock measurement setting) is under CSIR.

4)India ranked 23rd in second Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI):- India has been ranked 23rd out of 165 nations in the second Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) that measures the commitment of nations across the world to cyber security.

The Index has been released by the UN telecommunications agency International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

5)India’s New, Tough Anti-Hijacking Law Comes Into Force :- 

Provisions of the New Act:- 


  • The New Law replaces the 1982 Law that was too weak and narrow.
  • In the new law, the definition has been expanded to include death of "security personnel on board" or "ground support staff" as well.
  • In other cases of hijacking, guilty will be punished with imprisonment for life and fine, besides confiscation of movable and immovable property held by him or her.
  • Those who organise or direct others to commit such offence will also be considered to have committed the offence of hijacking.
  • The new law mandates the central government to confer powers of investigation, arrest and prosecution on any officer of the central government or National Investigation Agency.
