1)Front Page talks about Money Laundering and ED(Enforcement Directorate):- 

The Directorate of Enforcement is a law enforcement agency and economic intelligence agency responsible for enforcing economic laws and fighting economic crime in India.

 It is part of the Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance.

The prime objective of the Enforcement Directorate is the enforcement of two key Acts of the Government of India namely, the Foreign Exchange Management Act 1999 (FEMA) and the Prevention of Money Laundering Act 2002 (PMLA).

What is Money Laundering :- 

Money laundering is the process of making illegally-gained proceeds (i.e. "dirty money") appear legal (i.e. "clean").

PMLA, 2002 Act:-


  • Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 is an Act of the Parliament of India enacted to prevent money-laundering and to provide for confiscation of property derived from money-laundering.
  • The act prescribes that any person found guilty of money-laundering shall be punishable with rigorous imprisonment from three years to seven years and in some cases  maximum punishment may extend to 10 Years.



2)Upholding a Women's  right to choose, the Supreme Court on Monday allowed a woman to abort her over 20-week-old foetus with severe abnormalities.

What is the Law in India :- The law does not permit abortion if the foetus is over 20 weeks old.

Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act of 1971 bars abortion if the foetus has crossed the 20-week mark.

An exception to the law is made if a registered medical practitioner certifies to a court that the continued pregnancy is life-threatening for the mother or the baby.

What the Judge Said :-"The right of a woman to have a reproductive choice was part of personal liberty. The court said every woman had a sacrosanct right to bodily integrity. "

In India SC has in many instances allowed the abortion over 20 weeks also if the oetus suffered from serious ailments or abnormalities.



3)Mission Maccabiah :- For 60 years, octogenarian Sam Marshall’s mission has been to ensure that the Indian team gets to the Maccabiah Games in Israel — also known as the ‘Jewish Olympics’ — and brings home medals.

This year the Games will start when PM Modi will be in Israel so may be Sam Marshall is hoping to get some support from Govt. for Indian Teams in Maccabiah Games.

Octogenarian is a person between 80-89 years age.

4)President approves ordinance allowing Kambala in Karnataka:=

The promulgated ordinance legalises Kambala, bullock cart races and bull runs as traditional sports involving animals and exempt them from The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.

Kambala is the traditional slush track buffalo race that is held annually in coastal districts of Karnataka to entertain rural people of the area.



5)As per analysis of the latest figures compiled by the Zurich based SNB (Swiss National Bank) as on 2016-end, India has slipped to the 88th place in terms of money parked by its citizens with Swiss banks.

The analysis shows that the money officially held by Indians with banks in Switzerland now accounts for a meagre 0.04% of the total funds kept by all foreign clients in the Swiss banking system
