1)SAARC satellite set for lift-of:- The ‘South Asia Satellite,’ which India has built for use by countries of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) will be launched on May 5.
Advantages of this Satellite :- “Natural resources mapping, telemedicine, education, deeper IT connectivity or fostering people-topeople contact — this satellite will prove to be a boon in the progress of the entire region.
It is an important step by India to enhance co-operation with the entire South Asia.
***All SAARC countries, except Pakistan, have joined it.
Some Technical Aspects:- The 2,230-kg satellite was built by the Indian Space Research Organisation and has 12 Ku-band transponders.
What is a Transponder:- A wireless communications device usually attached to a satellite. A transponder receives and transmits radio signals at a prescribed frequency range.
After receiving the signal a transponder will at the same time broadcast the signal at a different frequency.
The term is a combination of the words transmitter and responder.

Why the Change is needed?:- So that slips generated by the Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) devices can be matched with the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) count.
