1)Vodafone, Idea merge to create giant Firm:-

Idea Will Get Merged with the Indian Unit of the UK Headquartered Vodaphone. This will become a $23 Bn Firm.
The Merged Firm will be led by Kumar Mangalam Birla.

2)Green nod for Neutrino project suspended:- The Southern Bench of the National Green Tribunal on Monday suspended the Environmental Clearance (EC) granted to the India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO) that was to come up in Theni,Tamil Nadu and asked the project proponent to make a fresh application.

Why Environmental Clearance Suspended??:- Madhikettan Shola National Park in Idukki district of Kerala was just about 4.9 km from the proposed project site and the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border was just a kilometre away, making it a Category ‘A’ project.
MOEF had earlier  informed that this is a Category 'B' Project.

What are these Categories A and B :- If a Project is Category B then Environmental Impact Assessment(i.e Effect of that Project on the Environment) is Not Necessary but for Category A Projects EIA is Necessay.

Now Fresh Applications will  be made or the Project.

3)Ganga, Yamuna termed ‘living persons’:- In a first in the country, the Uttarakhand High Court, on Monday, declared that the rivers Ganga and Yamuna were “living persons.”

On March 15, New Zealand river Whanganui became the first in the world to be granted a legal human status.

What Does it Mean:- Recognising a river as living entity means that if someone pollutes it, the Law will prescribe a Punishment equal to harming a Human Being.

4)Forward Bloc gets State secretary after 65 years: Senior party leader Naren Chatterjee unanimously elected.
The AIFB(All India Forward Block) was founded by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose in 1939.

5)Norway is the world’s happiest country:- According to the World Happiness Report 2017 released on Monday Norway is the Happiest Country in the World.
Last Year it was in 4th Spot.

Other top countries on the list included Nordic neighbours Denmark(2nd Rank) and Iceland(3rd Rank), as well as nearby Switzerland.

World Happiness Report is Published by : United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network. It is the fifth such report since the first was published in 2012.

6)Maggie MacDonnell,A Canadian who teaches at a school in a fly-in only village in the Arctic won a $1-million Global Teacher Prize.

7)The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved the following four GST related bills:

1.      The Central Goods and Services Tax Bill 2017 (The CGST Bill)
2.      The Integrated Goods and Services Tax Bill 2017 (The IGST Bill)
3.      The Union Territory Goods and Services Tax Bill 2017 (The UTGST Bill)
4.      The Goods and Services Tax (Compensation to the States) Bill 2017 (The Compensation Bill)

The CGST Bill makes provisions for levy and collection of tax on intra-state supply of goods or services for both by the Central Government. 

On the other hand, IGST Bill makes provisions for levy and collection of tax on inter-state supply of goods or services or both by the Central Government.

The UTGST Bill makes provisions for levy on collection of tax on intra-UT supply of goods and services in the Union Territories without legislature. 

Union Territory GST is akin to States Goods and Services Tax (SGST) which shall be levied and collected by the States/Union Territories on intra-state supply of goods or services or both.

The Compensation Bill provides for compensation to the states for loss of revenue arising on account of implementation of the goods and services tax for a period of five years as per section 18 of the Constitution (One Hundred and First Amendment) Act, 2016.

8)Merging Bhartiya Mahila Bank with the SBI:- The Government of India has decided to merge the Bharatiya Mahila Bank (BMB) with the State Bank of India (SBI) to ensure greater banking services outreach to a larger number of women, at a faster pace. The objectives of affordable credit to women as well as propagation of women-centric products need to be quickly achieved through a wider network and lower cost of funds.
